Kalolin Johnson, from Nova Scotia, is a young vocalist and musician from Eskasoni First Nation. A fluent Mi’kmaq speaker, she has been singing both in English and her native language since she was young. In 2016, Kalolin—along with students and teachers from her high school—wrote and performed the song “Gentle Warrior” as part of a Canada-wide tribute to Mi’kmaw poet and Eskasoni native, Rita Joe, sponsored by the National Arts Centre of Canada. The song was written as a call-to-action to halt the loss of indigenous languages across Canada, and, to promote reconciliation for survivors of the Residential School system. Later that year, Kalolin was featured in a Celtic Colours concert called “Gentle Warriors”. Carter Chiasson, a MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award-winner, is one of teachers at Allison Bernard Memorial High School who worked on the song.
